George Nulumba Nilburur ( George Milpurrurru) c.1934-1998

Since first listed, this painting has been beautifully mounted within a perspex box frame, which measures 70 x 34 cm (Aprox. 2` 3 1/2`` x 2` 1 1/2``).

This work is one of Nilburur`s (Milpurrurru`s) earliest paintings, which provides an insight into the artist`s artistic development when compared to his later paintings. The label too is a treasure for it not only offers provenance rarely seen, but also a broad insight of the artist himself and a telling example of what the author of the label considered important to impart.

This work has been extremely well preserved behind glass and the idea that it was selected to be part of an exhibition  by the renowned Charles Mountford and Bob (Robert) Edwards so many years ago gives licence to describe this work as an excellent painting with historical significance.

Since the making of this work, Nilburur (Milpurrurru) moved on to become a highly regarded artists and considered one of the great bark painters of Arnhem Land and his works have been widely collected and featured in publications, including an exhibition catalogue titled: The Art of George Milpurrurru, which was associated to a retrospective view of the artist`s works from 1975-1993 at the National Gallery of Australia in 1993. The works shown in this exhibition were drawn from the National Gallery's own permanent collection.

Collections include: The National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of NSW, Art Gallery of SA, Art Gallery of WA, National Gallery of Victoria, National Museum of Australia, Museums and Art Galleries of the NT, Australian Museum Sydney, The Robert Holmes a Court Collection -Perth, The John W. Kluge Collection-USA......
